Unhappy with your progress on your business goals this year?

You're not alone.

While it's normal for people to analyze what they've accomplished when New Years rolls around, almost nobody takes a step back to reflect on their progress as of the halfway mark.

Which is unfortunate, as performing a check in mid-year gives you time to get back on track before it's too late.

Sadly, most people forget about their goals by mid-January - do nothing to correct course throughout the year - then arrive to December 31st wondering how they let another year slip by.

Sure, bad weeks, months and even years can happen.

But generally speaking, if you're having one bad year after another, odds are the problem is you - not your life situation.

So if you're unhappy with your productivity, growth or income as we close out the month this Sunday, here's what we recommend.

First, try to understand why you're not on track to hit your goals.

  • Have you been lazy / procrastinating?

  • Do you dread doing the work?

  • Have you lost the excitement you felt toward your business?

  • Are you in the dreaded Valley of Despair?

  • Did life actually get in the way? Or are you making excuses?

If an unexpected illness, pregnancy or family emergency popped up, it's possible life really did get in the way.

But for most people, blaming life is just an excuse.

Instead, they've struggled (or flat out failed) to do the work.

On the surface, this might sound like a bad thing. And if you're legitimately just being lazy, you're probably not going to make it very far as an entrepreneur.

For many, however, struggling to do the work is a sign of something deeper.

In some cases, you launched a business because you were excited about ABC aspect of it. But once you got in the trenches, you realized you'd have to spend 90% of your time doing stuff you hate and only 10% doing the ABC thing.

In other cases, you may have chosen XYZ business model because you saw other people making huge money with it. But because that model doesn't lend itself to your super powers, you dread the day-to-day operations.

Whatever the reason, it's critical you find uncover why it's so hard for you to do the work. Because until you unearth whatever's holding you back, it's going to continue standing in your way.

Second, once figure out what obstacle is preventing you from being productive, you need to decide what you're going to do about it.

Maybe you learn your lesson, throw in the towel and start something new.

Maybe you hire someone to offload the work you can't stand doing.

Maybe you admit you've been lazy and force yourself to do some kind of Monk Mode dopamine detox to get back on track.

The plan of action you should implement will vary from person to person. But no matter your situation, you can't keep doing the same things and expect to get different results.

No, to make H2 your bitch, you absolutely must change your behavior.

Third and last, once you figure out why you're not taking action and what you should do about it, you need to create a plan.

And not just any plan, but one you can stick to.

As we've discussed in previous issues, it's our opinion you're better off figuring out what level of work you can do consistently (and actually doing it) than trying to work insane hours to "make up for lost time."

Why?

Because working insane hours / doing sprints is unsustainable.

Sure, there are situations where doing so is critical to getting a business off the ground / preventing a business from imploding.

But for 99% of people, doing the right things day in and day out - for months and years on end - is all that's needed to achieve success.

In conclusion, none of the above is new or revolutionary.

Sadly, despite reading this issue and agreeing with the points made above, most people will fail to put this into practice.

Mainly because doing so requires them to confront their excuses, change their behavior, and take action on uncomfortable tasks.

But if you struggle for long enough, you will very quickly come to realize you're going to struggle no matter what.

What successful entrepreneurs understand (that most people don't) is that we get to choose our struggle.

Do the hard tasks and you'll reap the rewards.

Choose the easy path and you suffer under the weight of being broke, living without purpose and feeling a constant sense of anxiety.

As Eben Pagan once said:

"Live hard and life is easy. Live easy and life is hard."

💡 Takeaway: If you're not on track to hit your goals this year, it's not too late. But it is getting close. So if you need to step up your productivity, identify why you're not taking action, develop a new plan, and take consistent action on it every single day.
